Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) Radiation has been a concern for the past 25 years and is growing exponentially as more people experience symptoms that cumulatively point to this low level radiation as the cause and culprit. Most of us didn’t use cell phones in the 80s and only since the early 2000s do scientists agree on what was discovered over the last15 years of research and studies: that there are unequivocal health dangers from our exposure to EMFs. The Telecom industry, which is obviously profit driven, cannot help us here, we’re nearly back to Tobacco, both in early denials of manufacturers’ advance knowledge of potential danger to human health, and in our collective addiction to the many conveniences we enjoy through cell phones and other low level wave emitting appliances.

Our natural environment, ideally a source of health and vitality is in serious trouble and unless you have access to wide areas of fields and woods, unencumbered by power lines, you may not be able to replenish yourself. This may not be news to you, however you may not be aware of the depth of this problem that truly endangers all humans and animals. Our households are full of convenient appliances each of which emit low level EMFs. Radio waves (RW) or Micro Waves (MW) are found to cause different health challenges like Alzheimers, Brain Tumors, Cancer, Fibromyalgia, Sleep disturbances, Endocrine problems (hormones,Thyroid trouble, infertility) and more. Despite the Telecom Industry’s denial or downplaying of the deleterious effects of low level radiation on people’s health, we each have to educate ourselves to reduce our exposure. So who do we believe? I have taken a closer look and found one primary reason for the increase in usage:
We are caught in the cross fire between our desire for wellness and vitality and the convenience and speed of our communications and research tools.
Industry fairplay is not always de rigueur, especially when billions of dollars are at stake. A January 2011 article in Seattle Magazine by Naomi Ishisaka outlines this problem based on the story of Dr. Henry Lau and his colleague Singh whose findings in 1995 on the potential health hazards of this type of radiation was not appreciated by Wireless Technology Research (WTR). Ms. Ishisaka writes: “Thus was launched an epic battle over research and truth. If Lai and Singh were correct about the potential impact on brain cells from radio-frequency radiation, there could be billions of dollars on the line for the cell phone industry in potential liability, leading to significant design changes and lost market expansion.”
There is now strong evidence, from multiple peer reviewed studies, to indicate that cell phones and similar EMF exposures cause in fact many serious diseases, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis AND cancer. Telecom giant T-Mobile in Germany commissioned an independent study to review all relevant research on the health risks from wireless telecommunications. The study concluded that, “On the cellular level, a multitude of studies found the type of damage from high frequency electromagnetic fields which is important for cancer initiation and cancer promotion.”
In other words, create a terrain, that disturbs our nervous system and natural immunity, and the consequence is the unbridled growth of aberrant cells. My friend recently asked: “What can I do about these different symptoms I am feeling? I think I am spending too much time on my cell and at the computer. They go away when I’m away from all electronics.” She’s a web-developer, reducing usage is not really an option for her. Her request was the impetus to write this article. Educating ourselves on potential dangers of intense usage of cell phones and other devices is no longer an option. Ignorance is NOT bliss – seriously!
With most of us deeply vested in cell phones, reducing usage, which is one of the two most logical solutions, is not always possible. Short of becoming telepathic on a global level – scary thought – mobile communications for work and with our kids, with friends and for any other purpose, are here to stay. The other recommendation is protection, and that in itself is a learning curve.

Not everyone has the same level of sensitivity to radiation exposure. For some there is no noticeable change. What we do know is that there is a cumulative effect on usage and exposure that creeps up on us. If suddenly you find you’re not sleeping through the night, have odd pains, get sudden headaches you can’t explain; what if it’s not just office stress, what if it’s actually your exposure to EMFs?
Scientific American describes an Australian sleep study: “These brainwaves [delta waves] are the most reliable and sensitive marker of stage two sleep—approximately 50 percent of total sleep consists of this stage—and the subjects remained awake twice as long after the phone transmitting in talk mode was shut off. Although the test subjects had been sleep-deprived the night before, they could not fall asleep for nearly one hour after the phone had been operating without their knowledge.” This is for anyone who keeps their phone under the pillow or within a 3 feet of their heads.
Studies since then have highlighted the need for caution. A French study found an almost three-fold increase in the incidence of brain cancer in people with more than 900 hours of lifetime cellphone use. Then, in March,  a Swedish study found that the risk of being diagnosed with brain cancer increased by a factor of three in people who’d used cell or cordless phones for at least 25 years.

Turn it OFF: There is caution in some of the studies I have read that state: Cell phones in talk mode seem to be particularly well-tuned to frequencies that affect brainwave activity. “The results show sensitivity to low-level radiation to a subtle degree. These findings open the door by a crack for more research to follow. One only wonders if with different doses, durations, or other devices, would there be greater effects?”
Dr. George Carlos has lectured widely on the dangers of excessive exposure to cell phones, cell towers, power lines and who was originally hired by Cell phone manufacturers to determine if there was in fact danger, found after 7 years that yes, there definitely was. His 5-part detailed presentation on you tube is an eye opener for all who want to go deeper into the topic.

Here is a February 2016 TEDx talk by Jeromy Johnson who when exposed to these constant waves, along with many others, experiences symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, constant headaches, physical pain on the side they are using their phones; incapacitating physical issues that deeply affect and even destroy people’s lives for they are no longer able to work. A quality of life no longer exists within the wide range of smart meters, power lines, wi-fi hotspots, cell towers and especially those new short towers, companies just put up in the middle of residential areas, on roof tops, on top of existing power line poles, which are much too close to people’s bedrooms. In essence people in urban areas or university and college settings are now surrounded and inundated 24/7 with this low level radiation.
We must ask industry to come up with a better solution - with ways to reduce these waves and to assign protective devices to keep us from harm.
Let’s turn to EMF and children for a moment. Children are exposed to serious pollution on every level as no previous generation of humans has. If your kid has a cell phone or if you are using a cell phone while pregnant or nursing your baby, be careful for here is a study that looked at the effects of cell phone usage on the very young. Children’s brains are soft, developing, skulls thinner than in adults, the phones have the same output whether a child or an adult uses them = greater impact for kids. “Children absorb more MWR than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner and their relative size is smaller.”
And finally, if you’re still reading, a few tips to reduce your exposure:
- Abstinence, if you can do it, great – not practical for most of us
- Reduce usage, unplug when you’re done for the day
- Corded home phone – it’ll work even when our satellites go out (Cordless phones EMFs are also as serious a problem)
- Keep the phone away from your ear when making a call, use the speaker option until you are connected. The wi-fi signal is at its most intense when it’s looking for its connection
- Texting: speak or write it, then hold the phone away at arm’s length when you send the text – that’s when it outputs the most radiation
- Do not continuously use streaming internet for more than 2 hours a day
- Don’t carry the phone on your person, I have a friend who puts hers inside her bra; I’ve been known to stick mine in my back pocket.
- Neither the front nor back of our bodies are good places for the phone – consider what’s at stake and what sensitive organs are nearby.
- Keep all electronics out of your bedroom including TV, ipads, phones, electric alarm clocks and any other appliance. They interfere with your sleep cycle and increase stress and inflammation in the body.
- When working at your laptop, take it off wifi and connect to an Ethernet cable, unplug the laptop and use it on battery charge.
- Use an Air Tube Headset - Lloyd Burrell explains the ins and outs of this device and how it reduces 98% of radiation compared to the regular headsets whose wires lead radiation directly to your head. And here I thought I was smart using a regular headset… NOT.
- Turn your phone, laptop, Ipad and routers off at night. This is something my Swiss friends taught me, they live in a building with natural EMF protection and use corded routers only.
- For years now, I’ve been using a universal mat a rubberized pad underneath my laptop, which conducts the earth’s balancing voltage to my body through whatever part of my skin touches it. I feel it makes a difference. A cord from the pad is plugged into the grounding port of my outlet.
- At the end of the day, let your family drop their turned off phones into a basket near the door and not retrieve or use them until the next morning.
- If you live within 400 meters of a cell tower, move – there is now lots of proof that this closeness affects everyone nearby. Again, brain tumors, cancers, leukemia, sleep disturbances, fibro myalgia, auto immune disorders, memory loss, difficulty learning.
